VILLAGE MAFIA - GAME OVER

Recommended Posts

pleasantvillepostcard.jpg

The wind, when it is active, stays at a breeze speed.

The grass is always cut at a reasonable length.

Flowers bloom and decorate the yards in front of and behind lake cottages, town houses, and downtown businesses.

The people walk slowly to and from their destination, always willing to speak to people.

Incorporated in 1919, the town of Bumrider always was a sleepy town. Very little happens. With a population of 1,212, everyone in the town knows everyone else. Everyone knows what is happening, who is getting married, who is pregnant, who’s kid was given a traffic ticket last night for going 5 mph over the limit, who’s kids were held back a year in school, who is getting divorced, who is running for a political position in the upcoming elections, and who is pegged to be the next star high school athlete.

The town sits on the east side of a lake, with residential neighborhoods and property on the north side of town, downtown businesses, restaurants, schools and parks in the middle of town and more residential properties and neighborhoods along with parks in the south side. Along the lake, vacation property and lake cottages surround the water and offer a quaint and friendly feel to Bumrider.
There has not been a murder, or even a reported shooting of a firearm, in the town since 1998. If there was a real-life version of Pleasentville, Bumrider is it.

That changed in a matter of minutes.

Mayor Bingo Swingo has been the Bumrider mayor since 2000, after winning a competitive election against long-time mayor Roscoe Cumquist. Swingo won with a 51 percent majority in the election, but he has been so effective as a mayor that he won re-election in 2004 AND 2008. And he is pegged by many to win it again come the 2012 election.

Swingo, who is married and has two children, is a former businessman. He grew up in Bumrider and is remembered as one of the greatest-ever Bumrider High School basketball players. His children, both boys, are ages 19 and 25. The 25 year old is an accountant who ran for state senator but lost in a landslide. The 19 year old attends the local college. Mayor Swingo’s wife is a well-known community activist. She is active in the church, local non-profit events and fundraisers and spends all free time helping at the local animal shelter.

On the night of November 14, 2011, the town sheriff gets a phone call. He quickly hops into his vehicle and races to Mayor Swingo’s house, a well-known landmark located along the lake. When he arrives, other police vehicles and ambulances are on scene and bystanders are watching with worried expressions.

The sheriff enters the house. Inside, he sees the carnage. Mayor Swingo has two bullets planted in his body, one in his head and another in his chest. The mayor’s wife rests next to him with a two bullets in the chest.

Two murders, one night, and now the town is without its mayor.

The news quickly makes its way through the town like an F5 tornado ripping through a Kansas town. People are left devastated. School is cancelled. Sports practices and games are postponed. Meetings are quickly forgotten about and unattended.

The local newspaper, The Bumrider Penetrator, has the news on its Website within hours of the official press release from the sheriff. The widely-read newspaper is a staple in the town, and if anyone hadn’t known, they read and learned of the news by day’s end.

The next day, a community meeting was held. Local businessmen, lawyers, councilmen, police officers, teachers, parents, hunters, fishermen, doctors, reporters, councilmen and many others attended the meeting in the Bumrider Community Hall. It fits more than 500 people, and around 400 showed up.

Bumrider must have a mayor.

It is up to you to select that person. It will be done by nominations and vote. If someone would like to nominate someone else for mayor, they must make the nomination the same way they would make a vote ( Official Nomination: ). Each player can nominate only one person. You cannot nominate yourself, but you can ask to be nominated.

Players are not allowed to vote to lynch at this time, but you can discuss suspicions.

After some time allowed for discussion and nominating people (maximum number of nominations set at 10), nominations close and you will be voting on who will be the next mayor. This will follow a loose version of Robert’s Rules of Order (I don’t know who Robert is or why he created these rules, so don’t ask).

The elected mayor wins when they have the majority of the VOTES CAST. This is important! If there are 17 votes cast and one person gets nine votes, he is elected mayor even though he does not have the majority of the number of players. “No votes,” also known as abstentions, do not count toward the vote, and do not affect the majority. If you don’t vote, you’re basically considered worthless in the process.

The voting period will end: once all players vote; once a majority is reached; or once we reach 25 pages. Note: you can change your vote only once.

If no one has a majority when all votes are cast or when the page limit is reached, the person with the most votes is the new mayor.

*If I see anyone blatantly spamming the thread with short posts solely to get to the page limits so their choice or themselves becomes mayor, I will ask Tottenham to delete those posts and consider mod kill. DON’T DO THIS! It’s not fair and, even as a mafia tactic, it’s bush league.*

The mayor has a number of extra powers. These include, but are not limited to: deciding on page limits each day; receiving double-vote power that they can split if they want to (meaning, the mayor can vote Player A and Player B at the same time, or put two votes on Player B); and decides who is lynched in case a majority vote is not reached by the page limit and there is a tie; among other things that will not be revealed.

Point is: the mayor is powerful, and these powers are added onto any powers the player may already have (being the mayor does not mean the player gives up his original role).

If, at any point, the mayor dies, there will not be a new mayor elected except for special circumstances.

There must be a mayor elected at the beginning of the game. The town cannot choose from the beginning to have no mayor.

There are a few characters that cannot be elected mayor due to conflict of interest, but they will not be publicly revealed. The mayor CAN BE a non-town player.

If you become mayor, beware: you are in the public light and every player will know your character. This will not immediately reveal whether you are town, independent, or mafia, but like any role reveal, it is up to the player to decide.[/font

You ARE ALLOWED to turn down a nomination for mayor (meaning you can choose not to run for mayor). That person who makes the nomination DOES NOT get their nomination back.

Votes to lynch will not be counted until Bumrider has a mayor, but again, you are allowed to discuss suspicions, theories, etc.

To note: This is a different type of game that most know or have played in. You, as the players, have much more control over the game, and it begins right here with the Mayor election.

Also, you are allowed to role reveal, but it is highly frowned upon as always. Be warned though, the role itself gives absolutely no indication regarding alignment. This isn't like normal games where you can look to a story or video game or movie plot and tell black and white who the good and bad guys are.

And I love you all.

Like Arnold but he can be a bit erratic. He'd need to promise to stay off crack for the duration of the game.

When the mayor is elected, can he be killed by the mafia like anyone else?

I would assume that the Mayor would have a bodyguard, after all it paints a target on their back so would make sense they would have at least one player protecting them.

I actually think you and Catch Her would be decent, I just don't want Broski to get his way.

I like the intro. Already intrigued. Ok, number 1 thing right now is to vote a townie for Mayor.

That's a helluva lot of power for a mafia member to have, god forbid.

This feels like a novel 3rd wrote, but he is protraying it through the glorious art of forum mafia
