@Doctor Dom fan of these guys?

Gypsy is one of the first "heavy metal" songs I ever heard, I think.

Tough question, the "original" lineup with singer David Byron? Yes...but even then they had 3 dodgy numbers for every great one.

The band themselves were fantastic.

The guitarist (and mainstay, still in the band) Mick Box is a monster player and underrated for sure.

Ken Hensley (keys/guitar) is IMO every bit the equal of Lord as the greatest rock keyboard players.

Lee Kerslake was an awesome drummer, he is best known for being in The Blizzard of Ozz and performing on that album and tour and then writing and performing on Diary of a Madman.

When Sharon fired him and Bob Daisley they both went (back in Lee's case) to Uriah Heep. Bob did 2 albums with them, Abominog and I can't recall the name of the other...I think John Lawton was the singer at that point.

Original singer David Byron drunk himself to death.

Trevor Bolder from the Spiders From Mars played bass for them for years until he died.

John Wetton played bass for them for a bit I think too.

Here's a bunch of their tunes I have burned into my consciousness:

Gypsy

Stealin

Look At Yourself

Easy Livin

Suicidal Man

Salisbury

Time To Love

Bird Of Prey

There must be heaps of others but that would be what I would have on one side of a 90 minute tape 🤔

Gold!

Fucking Tom Morello ruined it for me. The guy supports Brazil's terrorist group (Movimento Sem Terra). He is a disgrace to the world. Springsteen is great though!

I didn’t notice morello’s presence.

Talking about the song...killer version!

Heep were a second rate Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin wannabes.

While I agree that they didn't have the consistent quality output of those groups, that isn't a fair call.

False.

Objectively true.

Care to share some examples of them being Led Zep clones?

And we are calling them Deep Purple wannabes because they had an electric organ, right?

Rhythm sections all sound pretty different to me too...

Their original (70s) albums all have a pretty eclectic mix of song styles on them, and not that many "heavy" tunes that they seem to be renowned for.

Then they went with an AOR/NWOBHM sort of approach later on.

They were more like a proto Judas Priest or Queen rather than Zep or Purple I'd say.
