A strong case can be made that rock has been dead since Morrison called it redundant. Nothing of artistic merit really happened post-68 and the Manson killings. Music at that point became indulgently about self expression or folksy posturing. Fun but it’s value as a vital form of Art was over. Film took over from rock as the progressive creative form in the late 70s and early 80s with movie star creation being the prime objective of Hollywood. By the 90s everything was a remake of the 50s, 60s and 70s with improved special effects. What became important was the mode of distribution- vinyl, tape, cd, dvd, blu ray and the start of the technological age. Rock and Hollywood became celebrity culture as predicted by Warhol and technology and video games started to feed the consumers’ need to actually be the artist or hero. Every robot will be human for 15 seconds in virtual reality.
