wolf of wall street and social network aren't even top ten films. Lmfao. Those are total mainstream choices and leads me to believe you don't know a lot about cinema.

I'm an unabashed film snob.

I honest to god can't think of a movie in the last ten years that thoroughly entertained me, kept me immersed, surprised me, etc.

Closest was "Gone Girl" I think.  "Prisonsers" was dark man....really dark....like darker than Grace Jones' morning shit....but if you can handle how dark it was it was a hell of a gripping thriller.....not something I wanna revisit though.

My favorite from the last ten years was "Django," but Tarantino deserves his own category apart from any other movies cause he just does his own thing.  It's like comparing Beethoven to whatever shitty K-Pop band is hot this week and a suicide next week.

Like I said...Wolf of Wall Street is not "high cinema" but it was fun as hell and is actually more fun the more you watch it.  The "Mrs. Robinson" montage is gold.

"Interstellar" and "Inception" are so overblown with undeserved praise....clearly praised by people that never read Grant Morrison, Alan Moore, or Neil Gaiman.  YAWN.

Anyone watch Manchester by the Sea?  What a miserable pile of shit.

PS....I see a lot of movies on your lists that seem to be there just cause "critics" said they were amazing, but they were actually pretty shit.
12 Years a Slave?   God, nothing but slavery porn.  "The Lobster"  Fucking repulsive movie.  "Dallas Buyers Club.".....eye roll to that.

La La Land has no right to be on any "best" anything list ever.  Shit-ass movie.

Remember Birdman?  It tried to be unique, but the execution rather sucked.  Another case where the trailer was better than the movie.

(Just like the Joker....oh dear god I said it....I'm gonna get crucified.)

Did anyone else like Zero Dark Thirty?   I kinda liked it.  It had actual suspense.

To each his own I guess, and I commend you guys for watching stuff that at least TRIES, and isn't a goddamn Disney Marvel Product......

But we've come a looong way from stuff like Being John Malkovich, The Matrix, Fight Club, Amelie , American Beauty AND American Pie (the first one), Eternal Sunshine, Yi Yi, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.......

Hands down, 2010-2019 was the single shittiest decade for movies I've ever seen in my lifetime.  And Hollywood pandering to dumb people in China is a big part of why, so they can make the movies easier to understand with bigger explosions, and the other reason is the fucking horseshit identity politics.  Not to mention the complete lack of the semblance of a shred of an original idea these days.

OK....old man rant over.

I wouldn't call you a film snob based on what you chose to talk about in this post. Those are all mainstream garbage films for the most part. There is nothing in your post that would indicate to me you have any idea of American cinema let alone world cinema. Your post is like saying " I'm a foodie" and then talking about fast food.

the best film of the decade by a mile is the tree of life. Nothing comes close.

if I were to do a top ten..in no order

tree of life

the Florida project

Nightcrawler

the master

the lobster

Mad max

Melancholia

The house that Jack built

Take shelter

Parasite

The 2010s was an AWESOME decade for film. You just don't know where or how to find the good ones.

I also find it funny that the three writers you referenced are the three writers a hipster would reference. No offense but don't call yourself a snob around real cinema freaks cause you'll get curb stomped.

Tree of Life????

There's being a snob, which I admit to freely, and then there's sticking your entire head up your own ass for three hours.

Congratulations; you win, I guess!

Oh don't cry. Terence has made the best film in each of the last three decade imo. Thin red line. The new world and tree of life. Hes a master.

Django...really nigga? Have you seen any of the original django films? Django was fun but best film? Not even in the top 50.

The Florida Project was a great vehicle to showcase Willem Dafoe. Fucking guy is so underrated

Just watched Take Shelter. Hadnt seen it since it came out. One can certainly make the case for Michael Shannon being the best working actor today

I really gotta get my fat fuck ass to see Parasite

Maybe a controversial stance but I find Wolf of Wall Street and The Departed and all of the Marty/Leo films to be borderline shit. I know they are quotable and have a re-watchable aspect but they are such a fall off in quality for Scorsese. He's basically Marty Spielberg now. The Irishman is just lol.

Silence was a great film though...

Tarantino for me is not even in the conversation of top 100 directors

Tarantino is a very good film maker. When he started he ripped off city on fire and borrowed a lot for pulp fiction. He was dishonest about it as well. Imo he came into his own during kill Bill when he started being honest about "remixing" . He almost said fuck it and stop trying to win awards.

To say he's not top 100 is just anti hipster. Tarantino is absolutely an American original and one of the very best ever.

Yeah the departed and wolf sucked. Irishmen was a masterpiece imo.

I've always really liked Michael Shannon. He's like Vincent dnofrio. So underrated.I had him winning the Oscar over heath for revolutionary road

I loved seeing Joe Pesci again but the Irishman didn't have one memorable scene. The de-aging looked like shit and DeNiro's character was totally bland.

The most memorable part was stopping the car so the ladies could smoke

We couldn't possible agree less on these two films, but it's refreshing to hear something that passionate about anything that isn't the last "20 minutes of endgame omy gzz it's was soooo epic!!!"   So I respect that you know what you like, you understand film as an art form, and can see shit movies from a mile away.   I'd like to think we're the new Sisket and Ebert where Siskel enjoyed "movies" and Ebert enjoyed "films."  They disagreed, but they respected each other.  And they mostly haaated SHIIITTT for obvious reasons.

And yes, Thin Red Line was great.....for curing my insomnia!!   (But for real, that movie let me down sooo bad...with that cast it was inexcusable to make a movie that dull.  And around the same time Private Ryan completely stole its thunder.  For the record I loved Saving Private Ryan."

I adore Malick and he's the reason I went to film school. I liked saving private as well. I loathe holocaust deniers and thought that and schindlers list were important films.

Sorry I was shifty to you, I was having a shot day and took it out on you.

I really enjoy the weird aspects of cinema (I'm a lynch freak) I think the criteria for me is if I believe the film maker is telling the truth.so I can watch a shit movie if the director is shit as I believe him.case in point the fanatic. I enjoyed it because I believe Fred durst is shit so I believe he really thought he was making "art" even though it's a wretched film.

Do you watch films from the criteron collection? I'm a huge nerd for criterion.if you do what are some of your favs?

Yo Repo, we hit on Lynch and Criterion somewhere in another thread....I'll try to find it.   As I've said before, I adore Yi Yi and I own Tampopo.....and I love Twin Peaks when Mark Frost reigns him in a bit, but pure unadulterated Lynch can gross/creep me the fuck out.

I can still see the "baby" in Eraserhead when he unwraps the wrappings.......in my fucking nightmares.
