What are the top 5 greatest shows of all time?

"you had to be there"

things said only in defense of shit

I disagree. A lot of shows greatness comes from WHEN they are being aired.

The Golden Girls is an example. 4 old women discussing topics like sex and other issues would not have the same impact now as it did years ago. They discussed isssues that were not discussed as openly as they are now (Homosexuality, AIDS for example). They did it with humor but also respectfully. This added to the greatness of the show

I think comedy and everything drifts towards whatever is most efficient. Watching a whole episode of a tv show vs. looking at a jpeg. I ain't got time for that.

I think much of the comedy from Seinfeld would not be funny today. Some of it was actually racist (Babu Bhatt was played by Brian George, not Pakistani), and dehumanizing fat shaming (Newman).

I've never seen Breaking Bad, GoT, S&C, Mad Men. I probably shouldn't be commenting in this thread.

I wish I could say The X-Files but there were a lot of shit episodes. The Twilight Zone was always great.

I was in a different country and Seinfeld reruns weren't as popular as I thought it would be. I guess you had to be there because it was cutting edge at the time, and above the rest for sitcoms.

Every episode was well written. Other sitcoms were like Leave it Beaver dialogue (wasn't a bad show by the way). Seinfeld ventured into a lot of unconventional topics outside of standard family-work-relationship dynamic tropes.

A lot of memes deal with absurdist, subversive humor, and it was the beginning of that, almost like first greentext stories.

But wasn’t The Larry Sanders show the cutting edge show and Seinfeld was a remake of Taxi. It’s just one of those gag sit coms.

I've never actually seen the show. I thought Seinfeld was a remake of The Honeymooners and Woody Allen. I was being hyperbolic but by comparison, no other show was entering topics. Caroline in the City, Mad about You. I guess they were funny but not like George vs. the laser pointer. I'll forfeit Seinfeld at this point. I used to like reruns but I'd watch something new now.

imagine if you will, a show so bad it needs to tell its viewers when to laugh

shitfeld

It was nice for the lazy or dim listener to get a hint for where the joke was. The office had the stare which was more subtle.

Now I'm sure it is jarring to hear like the noise on a live album. Without it a lot of sitcoms would be revealed to unfunny.

That’s why I up graded to 2 Broke Girls, as an example of something I like that isn’t high art.

Seinfeld was late night cult show in UK and Sanders came after. It invented Curb Your Enthuiasm. Which should replace 2 Broke Girls in my list. That took Sanders mainstream. Semi reality tv. Being John Malkovich the tv show.

This thread is just an excuse to argue and call each other names.

There's no possible way anyone can agree on what the give best TV shows of ALL TIME are.

Historians are gonna include unwatchable bullshit like "I Love Lucy" and "The Honeymooners" cause they were important at the time.  But can you imagine actually trying to sit through that now?

When I was a kid, people raved about MASH, Cheers, St. Elsewhere, Hill Street Blues......I wouldn't have the patience to sit through any of that now.  The pacing is completely different than what became the norm.

When I was in middle school, "Twin Peaks" was the hottest thing on TV.   Nobody had ever seen anything like it.  Now it's pretty much forgotten except for a handful of hipsters that love to talk about how brilliant it was.  (Yes, I'm one of them.)

In high school, the hottest shows were "edgy" comedies like Seinfeld and Simpsons, and even Friends.  ER was the must watch, most talked about show of the week.  I can't imagine trying to sit through all 19 seasons of that.  NYPD Blue was considered a masterpiece cause it showed ass and side boob and they said "shit" sometimes.

Just like the Sopranos.  It's OK, I guess, but it didn't redefine the universe like people want to believe.   It was only a hit cause there were tits, and swearing, and lots of blood.

And now apparently Breaking Bad is the current champ of the "oh my god, this is unlike anything that's ever been done before."   I thought it was OK.   I didn't like most of the characters and for a "short" show there sure was a hell of a lot of filler.

I doubt even two people could actually agree on a top five.  All the stupid magazines have their own "Best of all time" lists, like Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly.  Why the fuck should we listen to them?  Does anyone in current year really think "I Love Lucy" is funny?

Anyway, I'm not gonna get into a little pissing contest about how my opinion is "right" and everyone else is a shit boomer.

I'll just list my personal favorites and leave it at that.  Do what you will with it.

1.  Simpsons

2.  Twin Peaks

3.  Seinfeld

4.  Friends

5.  Futurama

(PS....remember how good LOST was and then it shit itself in the end?  Let's start another thread for worst endings of all time.  I still think LOST's finale out-sucked them all.)

Dude, it's a Miser thread. It's not an excuse to fight or argue, it's an excuse for it to feign interest in outside opinion, then say "something, something, whole paragraph you're wrong I'm right."

"What does everyone think about.....? Personally I think about..."

Oh Miser has a new account again?  I haven't been paying attention.

And he thinks "Sex and the City" is a top five all time greatest TV show?   WTF?

Just a new name. And she keeps posting as if anyone gives a fuck what it has to say.

Verified? I dunno, but it's pretty easy to tell the inane drivel that he posts.

Jesus Christ.  That's fucked up.

I just looked at Vlad's posts and he "interacts" with Miser as if they were different people.  That's gross.

It’s the new standard of weird which has become unsurprising yet acceptable.

🙄

Here comes @Estrangedtwat to wobble his ass onto a thread and complain.

Of course the list is subjective! You're grown men, I shouldn't have to write a disclaimer. Good lord

I've watched a lot of shows recently and thought it would be fun idea. At least I try to make the forum interesting instead of just waiting on stanby until a Miser conversation comes to bitch at. I can't imagine being that obsessed.

It is very simple. Write your top 5. If you disagree... Why?

Did I simplify it enough for you?
