Favorite toy as a kid and as an adult

Recommended Posts

Yeah yeah yeah "fucking weirdo adults shouldn't buy toys" blah blah blah.  I've heard it all before; and I don't give a fuck.  It might have been weird decades ago but it's pretty normal now.

Anyway, I want to see what your favorite toys were when you were a kid and what your favorite modern day toys are.  And no, high tech gadgets like an iphone or camera aren't "toys."  I mean real toys.  If you don't have any toys as an adult, which is fine, then just tell me your favorite childhood toy.

Obviously this is really really hard for a giant fucking dork like me that has a roomful of both vintage and modern collectibles.   So many toylines to choose from...Star Wars, GI Joe, Transformers, Batman, Marvel, etc etc.

But I'm gonna have to just go with the gut.  In the interest of brevity, I'll leave off all my runner-ups, even though I love so many.

Favorite childhood toy?   Transformers Soundwave, 1984.  It probably looks retarded to kids today, but back then there was something so magical and almost other-worldly about about a tape player that could turn into a robot, that I can't even put it into words.  I'll never forget pulling it out of the styrofoam padding on Christmas morning 1984.

As an adult, it's much much harder.  I have so many.   But if I absolutely have to choose, and I do, cause I started this thread, I'm going with the 1/6 scale (12 inch) Kaneda and bike from AKIRA, made by Medicom/Bandai, 2010.

AKIRA is my favorite movie of all time, a real life changing experience when I saw it in 6th grade.  There's been a few toys over the years but nothing like this behemoth.  It's huge, and it's just an incredible sight to behold in person.  Not cheap either.  It was expensive as shit when released, and it'll cost you a hell of a lot more now.

All right.  Your turn.

My brother had Soundwave, he was fucking awesome.

My best friend had Optimus.

I only had small fry Transformers.

The 80s GI Joes were huge for me, I had a lot and inherited a TON of stuff from a friend of my brother.

I had such decent forces GI Joe probably gets the vote here.

Also Larry Hamas comic alongside was incredible.

Had a good whack of the MOTU between me and my brother, castles included.

The big Lion Voltron and pilots.

Castle lego

Original Star Wars toys and in particular the Falcon

Well the first one is Starscream (everybody knows that one) and the one in the middle is a YF-19? from Macross (plus?) with some booster thing I don't recognise.

I have a bunch of Macross (original) stuff, mostly ye olde model kits.

Built and painted

I have a Glaug (Bandai 1/100) and a 1/11000 or something of Kamjin's ship with the Macross on the same stand.

Also a very cool wind up walking Minmay doll.

No idea about the last one.

Impressive!   You even got the model number right of the YF-19...it is indeed from Macross Plus and it's got the Fold Booster mounted.  Basically the Macross version of hyperdrive.

The last one is the Swordfish II, Spike's personal spaceship from Cowboy Bebop, one of the last truly great animes ever made.

I just got Masterpiece Shockwave this weekend, so my Decepticon lineup in complete.

Now if you were a kid in the 80s, of course you knew that Transformers toys ruled.  But they weren't perfect.  They weren't poseable at all, sometimes they'd have parts in weird places like Megatron's giant trigger dick, and most of them looked nothing like they did on the cartoon.

Well, now it's all been fixed.  The Masterpiece line is a child of the 80s wildest dreams come true.  They look just like the cartoon, they're fully poseable, and of course they still transform.

If my 9 year old self could see this toy shelf, he would shit puke and puke shit.  And they're all MINE!!  MINE!!!
