Best Advice You've Ever Received

The Polish and Russians that live in my area tend to be generally awesome, fun, and hard-working mofos.

Yeah they are. The Polish here work their asses off but they have given themselves an awful reputation in the process due to their tight fistedness with money coupled with their scamming and exploitation of our welfare system.

Things like renting a four bed house and then illegally subletting it to 12 people with rotation of bed use. One person sleeps while the other works and then vice versa. It's illegal and does their image here no favours.

The welfare fraud from the poles here is massive. Some of them were even flying over here weekly on cheap Ryanair flights to claim welfare. Loads got caught after a massive crackdown.

Then there is the fact that they tend to send all their savings home, rarely spending and socialising here. It has built up a lot of resentment. It probably doesn't help that most of the polish here are lower class and a lot have criminal records back in Poland.

A polish friend of mine said that the people in Poland were glad to see most of the poles leaving for Ireland as they were troublemakers.

I'm not sure there is any universally good advice. I think a lot of believing in a truth is just rationalization. There's a lot of good food for thought in this thread. Over time the less I believe and more I observe. Maybe I can learn boxing by reading The Secret the way McGregor did.

Speak when spoken to

Always getting the last word eh?

This actually sounds pretty logical, and I've been thinking about it a lot.

“This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.”― William Shakespeare.

Translation: Just be honest in everything you do and with everyone you know. Not really advice that will make you more successful but will leave you with better peace of mind and will have less to worry about. Living a life filled with lies isn't the best way to live.

This seems silly but I like it...

Make your bed in the morning.

It sets the tone for the day. You've completed a task. You go into the day with momentum and accomplishment, however small. Your day will probably have continued accomplishments.

And if your day sucks, at least you'll head home to a made bed.

Never trust a fart

I had the flu-farts yesterday at work (I have been battling sickness for a week).

Let me just say it did not end well.

not advice i've received but something I've learned and am sharing with you fortunate folks:

(with regards to professional life) If you don't have to say something, don't. Say only what you need to say.

People get themselves into deep water because they're saying stuff they never needed to say. People like to brag, share information, spread gossip. Don't go on a run of "just saying stuff."

That's really great advice, I've made that mistake a few times in the past.  The more "extra" stuff is said, the more risk of something going wrong.
